H.E.R. Type Chord Progression – Tutorial

Stefan GuyMusic Theory14 Comments

In this video we look at a H.E.R inspired R&B chord progression I cooked up for this lesson. This chord progression features some of my favourite types of chords; the minor 9 in root position, the dominant 7 flat 9 and the dominant 9 sus4. If you take nothing else from this lesson, here’s three chords to add to your arsenal.

Chord Diagrams

Chord diagrams for the 9 chords featured in this tutorial. The last three chords are bonus chords. I’ve simply added a single note in each case to create a “phatter” warmer tone. As I mentioned in the tutorial, “phatter” is not always better, there’s a time and a place – I’ve included these to give you the option and add some chords to your working knowledge. 1. Hey Iman, it takes time my friend. I’m still learning myself. To be honest I mostly play by ear and I’m slowly learning more of theory behind it.

  1. what key(s) is this chord progression in? I like that you showed the chords but knowing the theory behind it would awesome.

    1. Hey Josh I totally understand bro! To be honest there’s a whole debate about this on the channel lol. I wasn’t sure myself so I didn’t put one. Some think Dminor. But there’s a lot of different scales you could play over the top of this. In the track I made, my melody and other elements were mostly in C major.

    1. Thanks brother! Not this particular chord progression no. I decided to go down the chord diagram root as a change to encourage people to play :).

  2. Stefan, This is an awesome deal you put together with chords and midi files. I’m a Power PC user so there is something for every one here. Thank You
